Hallyu Forum: Riding the Korean Wave!

Global Hallyu Forum: Riding the Korean Wave

The Korean Cultural Center Washington DC hosted a panel discussion on the rise of Korean pop culture, drawing a diverse audience of 300 guests to George Washington University on Oct. 16 for Hallyu Forum: Riding the Korean Wave.

The gathering featured some of the biggest names in Korean popular culture: Wonder Girls lead signer and billboard top 100 artist Sun-ye, Kimchi Chronicles host Marja Vongerichten, New York Asian Film Festival founder Grady Hendrix, and Pop Goes Korea author Mark James Russell.

As ambassadors of Hallyu (the Korean term for the Korean Wave), the speakers discussed current events in Korean pop culture and future prospects. A video recording of the talks will also be posted online.

Among the guests, Naver blogger “funky829” said that Sun-ye’s presentation, An Idol Star’s Illusions and Responsibility, was impressive because she calmly explained the reality of becoming and being a pop culture star. Guest Afiya Wilkins liked the panel selection, saying the storytelling format was very entertaining.

Hallyu Forum borrowed from the popular TED talk format, and was promoted through Facebook and other social networks. Several guests also won prizes of signed CDs from popular Korean artists 2NE1 and BIGBANG.

The Korean Cultural Center plans to expand the Hallyu Forum program with future events to build on the growing popularity of Korean popular culture.
