K-Cinema Screening and Social: The Grand Heist (Sept. 12 & 26) image

K-Cinema Screening and Social: The Grand Heist (Sept. 12 & 26)

In 18th century Joseon Dynasty Korea, ice is a luxury commodity more valuable than gold, coveted by many and carefully guarded by the royal court. In order to bring down a corrupt nobleman making a grab for power, exiled Duk-moo (Cha Tae-hyun) must assemble a crew of 11 brilliant misfits and pull off an impossible crime: case the joint, break in, and make off with the frosty loot. If they can find a way to work together, they will have a shot at the grandest heist imaginable.

The Grand Heist, known as the Joseon version of “Ocean’s Eleven,” was a box office hit in Korea in 2012. Directed by Kim Joo-ho, it exemplifies the electric fusion of historical, comedy, and action-adventure genres in Korean cinema. It won Best Film in the Orient Express Section at Fantasporo 2013, and was an official selection at this year’s Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the Fantasia Film Festival.
