K-Cinema: Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (Dec. 12 & 26)

Money and power beckon in the booming southern port city of Busan in the 1980s and 90s. Ik-hyun (Choi Min-sik), a charismatic and corrupt customs official, plays a dangerous game when he intercepts a drug shipment and cuts a deal with the city’s biggest crime boss, Hyeong-bae (Ha Jung-woo). The two heavyweight egos make a potent team, but a government crackdown threatens to bring down their entire operation. Can they work together to survive or will it be every many for himself in the cutthroat underworld?

Celebrated actors Choi Min-sik and Ha Jung-woo lead a stylish cast in this award-winning 2012 box office hit by director Yoon Jong-bin. Both gritty and full of local flavor, this gangland epic is cool, tense, and well-crafted, earning it the Grand Prize at the PaekSang Arts Awards, Best Screenplay at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards, and several Best Actor awards for the inimitable Choi Min-sik.

Viewer discretion is advised for violence and language. In Korean with English subtitles, 133 minutes.
