KCC Rocks Passport DC's Around the World Embassy Tour 2018

A little rain couldn’t dampen the mood of Passport DC’s Around the World Embassy Tour, which brought a vibrant mix of eager visitors to the Capital’s diplomatic neighborhoods on May 5, especially at the Korean Cultural Center (KCC), where Korean performances, craft activities, and food trucks drew more than 10,000 visitors throughout the day.

“Around the World Embassy Tour was a great success,” said Steven Shulman, Executive Director of Cultural Tourism DC, which coordinates Passport DC events. “Lots of people visited embassies and [as one guest] said it for many, ‘Around the World was fantastic!’”

With major renovations underway inside the KCC aimed at revamping its cultural spaces, the festivities took to the KCC’s outdoor spaces, and an exceptionally large performance stage. Highlights included local star performers from Washington Sorichung, which celebrates traditional Korean performance arts such as pansori storytelling and minyeo folk music based at their school and theater in Annandale, Va., and Choomnoori, which preserves the traditions of Korean performance art with multi-generational Korean American performers.

This year’s guest performer was the group Jin Myung, from Korea. Jin Myung’s mix of artists across genres and styles included the rare traditional balancing and juggling act beonanori as well as a samulnori percussion ensemble-inspired comedy routine and a talchum mask dance. In good Korean fashion, audience participation and engagement was a constant throughout.

To top off the day, Korea’s Ambassador Cho Yoon-je stopped by to mingle with guests and congratulate the performers on a full and exuberant program, undeterred by a few passing showers.
