K-Cinema Screening & Social: Spellbound (Nov. 1)

Ma Jo Goo (Lee Min Ki) is a struggling street magician whose life is turned upside down when he meets Kang Yeo Ri (Son Ye Jin). Jo Goo sees Yeo Ri looking miserable during one of his performances and is inspired to create a horror-themed magic show. It’s a huge hit, but Yeo Ri’s mysteriously gloomy disposition makes her a social outcast. When Jo Goo checks on her after a night of drinking, he discovers why: Yeo Ri can see ghosts, and they’re constantly haunting her. Despite his fear, Jo Goo tries to muster up the courage to help poor Yeo Ri overcome her dreadful curse.

Spellbound, the hit 2011 rom-com with a supernatural twist from director Hwang In Ho, reached #1 at the Korean box office upon release thanks to its charming originality. Also known as Chilling Romance, it went on to be screened at festivals around the world, including the Shanghai International Film Festival and Korean Film Festival Paris.

In Korean with English subtitles. 114 Minutes. Rated PG-13.
